A Slave - The Story of Sylvia Stark

Sylvia Stark was born slave in 1839 on a plantation in Missouri. As you know slaves weren’t allowed to know how to read or write or else that could help them escape to freedom. However, she learned to read and to write by listening and looking at young whites doing their lessons. In 1849 when Sylvia was 10, her father bought freedom for all of the family.  What a joy it would be to not have to work in the fields every day picking up plants and corn. What a joy it would be not getting whips on their backs. Two years later in 1851 the family moved to California and there she met a man named Louis Stark. They soon got married and got 2 children. Years later in 1860, when California introduced restrictions against black people, Sylvia, her husband and their two children flew to a new place called Saltspring Island. They lived in a farm and that’s where Sylvia got two more children. While Louis was running the farm Sylvia became a midwife volunteer and a nurse. Years later a family member received a dangerous sickness in those days called smallpox. The family member survived it but it got around the whole family like an epidemic. The Stark family survived it though. In the same year the Stark family moved to Nanaimo Area. Sylvia missed Saltspring too much that she returned there. She died there at the age of 106 in 1945. 106 was an old age to die at in the years of 1800.

Sylvia Stark inspires me because she had a lot of courage taking care of her children when they were sick.  She also had enough courage to move from different places to make her and her family`s life better. I recommend this story of Sylvia Stark for people that like history and biography of people.

Abraham Lincoln

lincoln

Today I am going to talk about Abraham Lincoln. Abe was born February 12 , 1809. He was born in Kentucky on a farm. Abe loved reading. His favorite book was about George Washington. His mother died when he was only nine years old. His dad went to Illinios to find another wife. When they came back, they said that they had found a great spot to live, in Illinois. So they moved in 1830. In 1836 Abe became a lawyer. He was so kind and fair that people started calling him Honest Abe. on November 4 , 1842 he got married to a lady named Mary Todd. Abraham Lincoln  heard that some states were not free. He wanted to free them, but how? So he made speeches all over the US. People liked his ideas and elected him to the US Senate. He ran against Stephen Douglas. Stephen said that each state should decide for itself if it wanted slaves. Abe lost the election but became famous. In 1860 Abe ran for president. Stephen Douglas ran too. But this time Abraham Lincoln won. He became the 16th president of the United States of America in 1861. Suddenly the Civil war began. The North and South fought for slavery. Two years later the war finaly ended and the North won. Some people were mad that it had ended. A man named John Wikes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln in the back when he was in the theater. He died April 15 , 1865.Abraham Lincoln had lead the United States of America in peace.

Thomas Jefferson the Third president of our country

Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson was a great president. Today I'm going to talk about Thomas. He kept a mocking bird in his office. But then Louis and Clark, the president's friends went to get a pet for him. They get him a pet hamster. But when he gets it he said it was ridiculous for the president to have a hamster. So instead of giving  the mocking bird away he gave the hamster away. Thomas Jefferson became the president in 1801. But in 1809 he gave away his job to James Madison.

George Washington,Thomas Jefferson,Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Rooservelt were one of the most famous presidents who ever lived. In Mount Rushmore you can see their faces made out of rocks.

Thomas Jefferson is also known on the nickel. You can also see that he lived over two hundred years ago but he is still famous. Thomas Jefferson my favorite president sadly died July fourth 1826.

Next time I will write about somewone else who was a president!

New Doctor

When I grow up I want to be a doctor. I got this idea  because we had a Halloween parade at our school. I had nothing to wear but a doctor.I will be a doctor 'til I die! I'l get to meet people at the hospital.I will feed them and take care of them. I maybe won't get to be doctor because you need to pass a test. I want to work hard.

About Today

Jade's fox

Today we went on a bike ride. It was 12 miles long. I forgot my coat but luckily we found one in Dad's car. It was cold and windy specialy after we stopped for our picnic. It is Thanksgiving day so we didn't have school. After few hours we were lost, and Dad had to bike to the car with Amaury (my mom's cousin)  because it was to long. So we stayed with Mom and we had to run a lot because it was so cold. We played "1,2,3 Sunlight" to warm us up. Finally Dad came back on time because it started to snow !

We got home, then my mom stuffed the turkey and put it in the oven. She also baked a cake. It looks really good.

I have to go because we are going to watch a movie. What a day !

Mitt Romney et Vote Yes

Math's fox
